Faldo Upgrades the Old Links at Ballyliffin
Faldo Design has just completed a renovation of The Old Links at Ballyliffin Golf Club. The facility is located on the northwest coast of County Donegal in Ireland. Nick Faldo has had strong ties with the club for many years and his firm was selected when the club decided to upgrade The Old Links in 2003.
The club’s association with Faldo has been instrumental in Ballyliffin's rise to fame on the world golf map. It has ambitions to host more European Tour events, and the investment in The Old Links shows that Ballyliffin's members and council want to deliver an outstanding tournament course.
Faldo Design has improved the course's strategic qualities through a complete re-bunkering program. The company also created several new ocean-side tees to optimize its site, including a new 14th hole along the coast. When the front nine was completed in 2005, the reaction by the members and visitors was very positive.
The back nine has been finished on schedule, and the club hopes the revised course – along with its sister Glashedy Links – gives Ballyliffin an unrivaled 36-hole links complex that will be ranked among Ireland’s best.
Nick Faldo is scheduled to inaugurate the renovated Old Links on June 7. Faldo plans to bring along a group of elite young golfers from his Faldo Series. The members are pleased with Faldo’s decision to bring the “Team Faldo” players to Ballyliffin, feeling it will be a boost to Ireland’s junior golf programs.
