Faxon & Sluman Rally to Win Legends of Golf

After opening with a 10-under 62 to take the first-round lead in the Legends of Golf, Brad Faxon and Jeff Sluman rebounded from a 66 on Saturday with a 65 on Sunday to win the Liberty Mutual Insurance Legends of Golf. The 54-hole Champions Tour event took place at the Club at Savannah Harbor in Savannah, Ga.

The duo carded four birdies on the front nine and tacked on three more on the back to finish at 23-under 193, one stroke better than the teams of Fred Funk and Mike Goodes (63) and Gene Sauers and Kenny Perry (62). Faxon and Sluman split the $230,000 winner's share.

"This is a perfect marriage because it's not like we're going to get mad at each other if either one of us doesn't play well," Faxon told reporters. "I know he's going to try his hardest, and I'm going to try my hardest."

Sluman had finished second in the past three Legends of Golf with Craig Stadler, but decided to partner with Faxon this year. "I had a wonderful four, five years with 'Stads' and all that, but like everything else, it was time," Sluman said, adding, "It's a dream come true to win with Brad."

Sharing fourth at 21-under 195 were Larry Mize/Hal Sutton (65), Brad Bryant/Tom Purtzer (64), Fred Couples/Jay Haas (65), Michael Allen/David Frost (66), Mark Calcavecchia/Peter Senior (66), Mark O'Meara/Esteban Toledo (66), Stadler/Kirk Triplett (67), and Andy North/Tom Watson (67).

The teams of Steve Elkington and Rocco Mediate (66) and David Eger and Mark McNulty (69) tied for 12th at 196.

Second-round pacesetters, Jay Don Blake and Roger Chapman, soared up the leaderboard on Saturday with an 11-under 61, but could only muster a final-round 1-under 71 to end up in a tie for 18th with five other teams at 18-under 198.
