Firm Set to Remodel Course Near Wimbledon


Thomson Perrett & Lobb, the golf course design practice founded by five-time British Open champion Peter Thomson and partners Ross Perrett and Tim Lobb, will undertake a bunker renovation at Wimbledon Park Golf Club in southwest London.

Founded in 1898, Wimbledon Park Golf Club is located between the famed Lawn Tennis Club and Wimbledon Park.

Easily accessible from central London and the M25, the facility has an 18-hole golf course and a short-game practice area. From certain parts of the course, particularly the 12th hole, players have panoramic views of south London.

"Wimbledon Park Golf Club has a rich and colorful history and is a classic English parkland layout," said Lobb. "Our plans are to review the current bunkering across the whole course and implement a design plan that will enhance the playing experience for members and guests."

Over the years, Wimbledon Park Golf Club has seen many changes, most notably the construction of four clubhouses. A fire destroyed the first one in 1901 with a replacement built near the current 18th tee.

In the 1930s, when alterations to the course were also proposed, another clubhouse was constructed, only for it to be destroyed in the Blitz during World War II. Those bombings also altered the course. A sand bunker near the 13th green was created from one of the numerous bomb craters.

Added course manager, David Langheim: "TPL's work will undoubtedly give all golfers a greater strategic challenge when they play Wimbledon Park, but the improvements will also enhance the aesthetics of the course and make it much more appealing to the eye."
