Fogged in at Torrey Pines

The third round of the Farmers Insurance Open was held in abeyance Saturday due a clinging fog at Torrey Pines that prevented the 87 golfers who made the weekend cut from seeing where they were going.

The 36-hole facility alongside the Pacific Ocean near San Diego was swathed in an atmosphere that put the $6.1 million PGA Tour event on indefinite hold. The first tee times were delayed for three hours. Then, when the sun finally broke through the first group teed off. But, only five minutes later, play was halted again.

"There is nothing we can do about it," said Mark Russell, the Tour's vice president of rules and competition. "If Mother Nature doesn't want you to play, you're not going to play.

"Hopefully, it gets better and we can play some golf. If not, we'll see what happens."

As of 4:15 p.m. PST, the third round had still not started. At that time Russell hoped that some of the field would begin their third rounds, but was realistic about the situation. "The moment I let all these golfers go home it will clear up," he told CBS Sports. "If we can play any golf at all, it would be tremendous. But we are fogged in."

The Tour hopes to complete the tournament by getting in 36 holes Sunday. But the weather tomorrow looks iffy, with the same low-level moisture keeping the fog in the area through Sunday morning. Later in the day a cold front is expected to come through the area, with scattered showers by noon.

As a result of the fog, Tiger Woods is still the leader. The event's six-time winner remains at 11-under 133, two strokes ahead of Billy Horschel and three shots lower than Casey Wittenberg, Canada's Brad Fritsch, Erik Compton, Steve Marino, Jimmy Walker and Josh Teater.

Even if play resumes Saturday, it would be two hours before Woods and the other leaders would tee off. As of late Saturday afternoon - combined with more possible delays Sunday morning, the Farmers Insurance Open will likely have a Monday finish.

"We've pretty much lost a whole day right now and it looks like we might have to play Monday," Russell noted. "Our regulations say we need to play 72 holes, and to do that we might need to go to Monday."
