Fogged Out at Torrey Pines


The third round of the Farmers Insurance Open was held in abeyance all day Saturday due a clinging fog at Torrey Pines that prevented the 87 golfers who made the weekend cut from seeing where they were going.

The 36-hole facility alongside the Pacific Ocean near San Diego was swathed in an atmosphere that put the $6.1 million PGA Tour event on hold. The first tee times were delayed for three hours. Then, when the sun finally broke through the first two groups teed off the first and 10th tees at the South course. But, only five minutes later, play was halted again.

"There is nothing we can do about it," said Mark Russell, the Tour's vice president of rules and competition. "If Mother Nature doesn't want you to play, you're not going to play.

"Hopefully, it gets better and we can play some golf. If not, we'll see what happens."

Well, nothing happened, as the third round was officially suspended at 4:00 PDT. Russell said that the tournament will have a Monday finish, with nine to 12 holes to be completed if all goes well with the weather Sunday, which has a forecast of more fog in the morning followed by scattered showers by noon.

At the end of Saturday Tiger Woods was still the leader. The event's six-time winner remained at 11-under 133, two strokes ahead of Billy Horschel and three shots lower than Casey Wittenberg, Canada's Brad Fritsch, Erik Compton, Steve Marino, Jimmy Walker and Josh Teater.
