Frost Moves into Sunday with Regions Tradition Lead


David Frost fired a 6-under 66 to supplant 36-hole leader Duffy Waldorf in the Regions Tradition. The second of five Champions Tour majors this season is taking place at Shoal Creek in Alabama.

Frost, a 53-year-old South African, posted seven birdies and a bogey to reach 12-under 204, a stroke ahead of Fred Couples (68) and two in front of Waldorf (71), Morris Hatalsky (67) and Michael Allen (69).

Frost won the Toshiba Classic in March for his fourth Champions Tour title so he's familiar with being atop the leaderboard in a tournament. "It's more just being comfortable with your game," he told reporters.

"Getting into position like this makes you become a little more at ease the more you get there, but my game's been good this year. So I'm quite excited about (Sunday)."

Couples - the 2013 U.S. Presidents Cup captain and a recent inductee in the World Golf Hall of Fame - is also no stranger to being among the leaders. "I played really well," said the 53-year-old from Seattle.

"I'd like to say I wasn't in too much trouble, basically because when I drove it in the rough, I judged my second shots pretty well out of the rough. (Sunday), I'm going to have to hit more fairways and play a little bit better from tee to green. When I did hit a good shot, it was a really good one and I made birdies . . . I'm one behind Frosty. I'm in good shape."

Sharing sixth at 8-under 208 are Mexico's Esteban Toledo (69), Scott Hoch (69), Bart Bryant (70), Loren Roberts (70) and Jeff Sluman (72).

Right behind at 209 are defending champion Tom Lehman (69), Kenny Perry (67), last week's winner in the Principal Charity Classic - Russ Cochran (70), David Eger (70), John Cook (71) and Mike Goodes (71).

Corey Pavin (68) is tied for 17th at 210 with Kirk Triplett (69), Mark Calcavecchia (73) and Canada's Rod Spittle (73). Pavin had the shot of the day, a hole-in-one on the 171-yard, par-3 eighth. The ace was the 1995 U.S. Open champion's first since the second round of the 2008 AT&T National.

"I've got the video in my head," Pavin said. "I got up there and just hit a 6-iron right at it actually. I hit a really good shot and actually when it was in the air I said, 'Go in!' and it landed on the front fringe or right on the fringe on the green and just trickled and rolled in like a putt."
