Germany to Host 2015 Solheim Cup


For the first time in history, the Solheim Cup will be played in Germany. In 2015, the biennial competition pitting women professionals from the United States and Europe will be held at Golf Course St. Leon-Rot, a 36-hole facility near Frankfurt.

The announcement was made Monday by the Ladies European Tour, which co-sponsors the Solheim Cup with the LPGA Tour.

"The Solheim family is thrilled with the selection of the Golf Club St. Leon- Rot as the site for the 2015 Solheim Cup," John A. Solheim, chairman and CEO of PING said in a statement.

"It is a wonderful golf facility that will provide a difficult test for the professionals and juniors. I know the team at the club will provide everyone with an exceptional experience."

Previous European venues for the Ryder Cup-style competition have included Scotland (twice), Wales, Sweden (twice) and Ireland. The Europeans won the 2011 event at Killeen Castle Golf Resort by a 15-13 margin for its first victory since 2003 at Barseback Golf & Country Club in Sweden.

Colorado Golf Club, in Parker, Colo., will host the 2013 Solheim Cup. The U.S. leads the all-time series - which began in 1990 - by a score of 8-4.

Germany's Sandra Gal was thrilled with the decision to play in 2015 in her native land. "I can't wait for Germany to host the 2015 Solheim Cup," said Gal, who was part of the 2011 team.

"It will be a fantastic experience for our golf in Germany . . . I am sure my home country will be a great host."
