Glasson Four Up in Hawaii


Bill Glasson followed up his opening 66 with a 7-under 65 to take the 36-hole lead in the inaugural Hawaii Championship. The $1.8 million, 54-hole Champions Tour event began Friday at Kopolei Golf Course.

Glasson, a 53-year-old from Fresno who now lives in Stillwater, Okla., carded eight birdies and a bogey en route to reaching 13-under 131, four strokes ahead of Zimbabwe's Mark McNulty (68) and first-round leader Peter Senior of Australia, who shot a 70 after starting with a 65.

Although in good position to secure his first victory on the over-50 circuit, Glasson knows there's more golf to be played. "Finishing the way I did is going to help tomorrow," said the seven-time PGA Tour winner, who had three birdies in his last five holes.

"I need to hit some fairways. That's my thing. My irons have kept me in the ballgame. My driver, she's not liking me right now," added Glasson, whose career has been interrupted by numerous injuries. "We're having a little war. So, we'll see who wins that battle."

Sharing fourth at 136 are David Frost and Corey Pavin - who both posted 67s, and Willie Wood (68). Six behind Glasson are Mark O'Meara (67) and Dick Mast (68).

Tom Lehman, the leader in the season-long Charles Schwab Cup points' race, shares ninth at 138 with Andrew Magee (66) and Jay Don Blake (72). Blake won the previous Champions Tour event, the Boeing Classic, three weeks ago.
