Golf Nuts Break World Record

At midnight on June 19, 2007, a foursome of members of the Golf Nut Society, led by the soon-to-be-named 'Head Nut' Michael Donovan, broke the Guinness World Record for the Most Holes Played by a Four Ball team in a 24-hour period. The golf nuts played 195 holes in just under 21 hours. The old Guinness record was 180 holes in 24 hours. The record will be made "official" within the next three weeks when the Guinness book completes the audit of the scorecards, witness statements and course yardage.

"It was grueling, and in the worst conditions you can imagine," recounted Donovan of their round at Dragon Ridge Golf Club in Henderson, Nev. "We played in 25-30 mph winds and a high temperature of 107 degrees, with a low of only 99 degrees."

The foursome that included Donovan and three other registered Nuts - Mark Stephan, Jim Honer and Brian Evans, also broke two Golf Nut Society records:

1. Most Holes played at night: 53 (old record 18)

2. Fastest 18 Holes by a foursome in a cart: 1:25:06 (old record: 1 hour, 33 minutes by a twosome!)

"I hope that this proves to our founder and current Head Nut, Ron Garland, that I have 'the right stuff' to lead the Golf Nut Society into the future, but right now, I'm still exhausted, said the 55-year-old Donovan, who took over the operations of the society a couple of weeks ago. "People over the age of 50 should not attempt this feat, and I never will again!"

"Donovan has certainly proved that he has what it takes to hold the title of 'Head Nut,' " said Garland after hearing the news. "I'm certainly not nuts enough to do that!"

"An official ruling on the bonus points earned by the foursome will be made by me on July 4th, the day that I will proudly pass the gavel to our new Head Nut, Michael Donovan" Garland said.
