Gomez Now in Front in Puerto Rico


While 36-hole leader Andres Romero struggled Saturday, Fabian Gomez surged past his fellow Argentine in the Puerto Rico Open. The 34-year-old Gomez fired a 7-under 65 to forge a tie with American Scott Brown (67) in the $3.5 million PGA Tour event, which began Thursday at Trump International Golf Club - Puerto Rico.

Heading into Sunday's final round Gomez and Brown are at 18-under 198 - the tournament's record through 54 holes, four strokes ahead of Americans Blayne Barber (66), Brian Stuard (66), Jordan Spieth (67) and Steve LeBrun (70). Morgan Hoffman (68) is in solo seventh at 203.

Another stroke back are Australia's Matt Jones, who shot Saturday's low round, an 8-under 64, Zimbabwean Brendon de Jonge (65), Japan's Ryo Ishikawa (66), Boo Weekley (66), Justin Bolli (68), defending champion George McNeill (69) and Peter Uihlein (72).

Romero began well Saturday, opening with a 2-under 34 on the front nine, and then started the back with a birdie on the par-4 10th. But from that point forward, it was all downhill for the 32-year-old, who's only Tour win came in the 2008 Zurich Classic of New Orleans. A triple-bogey on the par-4 12th was followed by three bogeys coming home for a 5-over 41 and a 3-over 75.

After opening with two straight 65s, Romero is now tied for 15th at 11-under 205 with Canadian Graham DeLaet (67) and Jon Curran (70).

Nine players are tied for 18th at 205, including Camilo Villegas (66), Nick O'Hern (68), Vaughn Taylor (69), Luke Guthrie (69), Patrick Cantlay (69), D.J. Trahan (69), Robert Streb (70), Cameron Percy (71) and David Hearn (71).
