Goosen Has Back Surgery - Out Indefinitely


Retief Goosen underwent back surgery last week and will be away from competitive golf for an indefinite period. The two-time U.S. Open champion from South Africa has been dealing with back problems for several months; in March he received platelet-rich plasma injections in his back.

On his website, www.retiefgoosen.com, he wrote: "I just wanted to update you on my back injury that has caused me a few problems recently. I met with my spinal consultant again last week and we decided that the best treatment was for me to have back surgery this week. The operation has gone well and I will now stay in hospital for a few days before recuperating at home.

"I am looking forward to returning to the Tour fully fit and, in the meantime, I plan to put my feet up, enjoy watching the golf on TV and relish the opportunity to spend more time with Tracy and my children.

"I will keep you informed of my progress over the next few months."

The 43-year-old has not been his usual steady self this season. In 12 starts, he has two top-10 finishes, earning $571,174. Once he makes it through rehab, Goosen plans to file for a medical extension, which he's likely to receive, as he ranks 15th on the PGA Tour's all-time money list and still has two earnings exemptions.
