Goydos Secures Maiden Victory on Champions Tour

Paul Goydos earned his first title on the Champions Tour on Sunday at Kapolei Golf Club.

Beginning the final round tied for the lead in the Hawaii Championship with Fred Funk through two rounds of the 54-hole event, the 50-year-old Californian closed with a 4-under 68 to end up at 19-under 197, a stroke ahead of Funk - who shot a 69 - and Scott Dunlap, who rallied with a 65.

Goydos a two-time winner and one of only seven players to post a 59 in a PGA Tour-sponsored competition, earned $330,000.

Goydos started with rounds of 66 and 63, and his total of 19-under established a new tournament record, blowing away the previous mark of 14-under 202 set by Willie Wood in 2012 in the inaugural event.

Russ Cochran had a 66 to end up in fourth at 199, while another stroke back was Jeff Maggert (67).

Wes Short Jr. recorded a 68 to end up in sixth at 201, while another stroke back were Mark Brooks (68), Jay Haas (68), Tom Pernice Jr. (70), Doug Garwood (70) and Core Pavin (71).

Pernice took the first-round lead after a 60 in the birdie-fest, and Pavin shot a 61 Saturday.

Davis Love III finished well down the leaderboard in his Champions Tour debut. After opening with a 69, the 20-time PGA Tour winner posted two straight 72s to finish in a tie for 64th in the 81-man field.

Bernhard Langer, the runaway leader in the season-long Charles Schwab Cup, didn't play in Hawaii.
