Homa Wins Individual Title for Cal


Max Homa paced Cal through the stroke-play portion of the NCAA Men's Golf Championship on Thursday. The senior carded rounds of 70, 65 and 66 at the Capital City Club in Atlanta to win the individual title by three strokes.

Cal finished stroke play at 16-under 824, six shots ahead of Georgia Tech, and the eight qualifying teams move into the match-play portion of the championship.

Also advancing are Alabama, Texas, Illinois, New Mexico, UNLV and Arizona State. The latter three teams, along with Texas A&M, finished tied at 2-over 842; the Aggies lost a playoff and the other teams moved on to match play.

Though they're off to a good start, Homa and Cal's goals have not yet been met. "I'll probably celebrate for about 30 minutes, just hang out with my teammates, my best friends," he said Thursday. "Then I'll refocus on the real prize."

Homa won by three shots over Jon Rahm of Arizona Stat, Daniel Berger of Florida State, Dominic Bozzelli of Auburn, Rick Lamb of Tennessee, Kevin Penner of UNLV and Brandon Stone of Texas.

"This is the biggest accomplishment in my life, and it's not even close," Homa added. "Obviously, the team championship would be much better, but this feels very, very good."

The Friday quarterfinals will pit Cal vs. Arizona State, Georgia Tech vs. UNLV, Alabama vs. New Mexico and Texas vs. Illinois. The winners advance to the semifinals on Saturday, with the championship match on Sunday.
