Horschel Maintains Lead in Texas Open

Billy Horschel kept the two-stroke lead he enjoyed at the start of the third round of the $6.2 million Valero Texas Open, held on the AT&T Oaks course at TPC San Antonio.

The 25-year-old Floridian followed up a pair of 4-under 68s with a 70 Saturday to reach 10-under 206, two shots clear of Jim Furyk (69) and Charley Hoffman (70).

Horschel carded five birdies and three bogeys and is in good position heading into Sunday's round to secure his first Tour title. Horschel has been playing well of late; he finished as the runner-up with Henrik Stenson in last week's Shell Houston Open behind winner D.A. Points.

Sharing fourth at 210 are Ryan Palmer (68), Bob Estes (69) and Northern Ireland's Rory McIlroy (71), while five behind Horschel are Ireland's Padraig Harrington (70), Scotland's Martin Laird (70), South Korea's K.J. Choi (72) and Americans Jeff Overton (70) and Daniel Summerhays (73).

Tied for 12th at 212 are Germany's Marcel Siem (69) and D.J. Trahan (71). Sharing 14th another stroke back are Americans Martin Flores (70) and Richard H. Lee (69), and England's David Lynn (71).

Scores continued to soar in the tournament, primarily due to unpredictable winds sweeping across the Oaks course. Palmer's 68 was Saturday's low mark.

Starting the third round only three shots behind Horschel, Retief Goosen fell way down the leaderboard after an 8-over 80. Sweden's Peter Hanson was five back but is now tied with Goosen for 60th at 3-over 219 following a 78.

Joey Snyder III had the highest third round, a 15-over 87 that included eight bogeys, four doubles and a lone birdie on the par-4 fifth hole.
