Horschel & Mickelson Maintain 36-hole Lead


After the second round was concluded Saturday morning there was no change atop the leaderboard in the 113th U.S. Open at Merion Golf Club.

Phil Mickelson and Billy Horschel still shared their Friday clubhouse lead at 1-under-par 139 on the East Course. The two remain the only players under par through 36 holes.

Sharing third at even-par 140 are Steve Stricker and two Englishmen, Luke Donald and Justin Rose.

The big news following the completion of the second round - which was caused by weather delays on Thursday - was that the cut line shifted overnight from 7-under to 8-under, which allowed several players to advance to the weekend.

Among those making the cut right on the number are former major champions Martin Kaymer and Mike Weir, along with such high-ranking players as Dustin Johnson and Brandt Snedeker.

Two amateurs continued to impress. Michael Kim, a junior at Cal, is tied for 13th at 143 following rounds of 73 and 70. Cheng Tsung Pan, a Taiwan native and junior-to-be on the University of Washington golf team, was 2-under through nine holes in his second round before darkness closed the course.

Pan returned Saturday morning to play the back nine and wasn't quite as successful, carding two bogeys and a double on the par-3 17th for his second straight 2-over 72.

The weekend forecast for Ardmore, Pa., calls for a bright and sunny Saturday, with continued warm temperatures but a chance of thunderstorms for Sunday's final round.
