Jenkins Flies Low in Boeing Classic


Tom Jenkins fired a stellar 7-under-par 65 to take the second-round lead in the 54-hole Boeing Classic. The $2 million Champions Tour event started Friday at TPC Snoqualmie Ridge east of Seattle.

The 64-year-old Jenkins got off to a rousing start with an eagle on the par-4, 439-yard third hole and then added five birdies to reach 7-under 135, two strokes ahead of Willie Wood, who shot 68.

Wood is looking for his second straight title on the over-50 circuit after taking last week's Dick's Sporting Goods Open. That was the 51-year-old Texan's first victory since the 1996 Deposit Guaranty Golf Classic on the PGA Tour.

Jenkins bagged the eagle when his 148-yard second shot - with an 8-iron -bounced off the green collar and rolled into the cup.

Three behind Jenkins are former Boeing Classic champions David Eger (68) and Mark Calcavecchia (73), Jay Don Blake (70), Seattle-area native Mike Reid (68) and Mark O'Meara, who carded the low round of the day at the 7,264-yard course, an 8-under 64.

Also in the mix at 139 heading into Sunday's final round are John Huston (68), Mark Brooks (68), John Cook (69), Rod Spittle (70) and Joel Edwards (70).

Local hero Fred Couples withdrew Friday following his opening drive on the first hole. Also not playing in the second round were Andy Bean, who opened with an 81, and 67-year-old Mike McCullough, who shot an 86 Friday but didn't sign his card and was DQ-ed.
