Kim Wins U.S. Women's Amateur Public Links


On Saturday, Kyung Kim beat Ashlan Ramsey 4 and 2 in the 36-hole championship match to win the U.S. Women's Amateur Public Links.

The event, which is limited to players who don't hold privileges at any course that doesn't extend playing privileges to the general public, was held at the 6,221-yard, par-72 Neshanic Valley Golf Course in Neshanic Station, N.J.

Kim, an 18-year-old from Chandler, Ariz., took a 2-up lead on the 32nd hole and won the final two holes to close out Ramsey, a 16-year-old from Milledgeville, Ga.

With eight birdies, Ramsey played well but couldn't overcome Kim, who had two more birdies over 34 holes. "I didn't know I had 10 birdies," Kim told reporters. "That's so much."

"I just can't believe it," said Kim, who'll be a freshman at USC this fall. "It was a long week, but to be finally done and to win, it's pretty amazing."

Before heading off to college, she will make a return trip to Korea, her parents' homeland. "I haven't been to Korea for like eight years," she said.

"Kyung, obviously, played better than me, but I think the difference was she made more putts than I did," Ramsey conceded.
