Langer on Fire at Toshiba Classic
The seemingly ageless Bernhard Langer is at it again. The 56-year-old German, who continues to demonstrate that age shouldn't slow you down golf-wise, opened with a symmetrical eight-birdie 63 to wrest the first-round lead in the Toshiba Classic.
The World Golf Hall of Fame member, who's accumulated 42 European Tour wins along with three more on the PGA Tour - including the Masters in both 1985 and in 1993 - and 19 Champions Tour titles, posted four birdies on each of the front and back nines.
The $1.75 million, 54-hole tournament, the first Champions Tour event since the ACE Group Classic in mid-February, teed off Friday at Newport Beach Country Club in Southern California.
Taiwan's Chien Soon Lu shot a 65 along with Jeff Hart and 2010 champion Fred Couples, who had seven birdies and an eagle at one of his favorite courses on the West Coast.
Three behind Langer are Duffy Waldorf, Scott Simpson, ACE Group champion Kirk Triplett and 2013 Charles Schwab Cup winner Kenny Perry,
Defending champion David Frost got off to a so-so start with a 1-over 72. After two bogeys on the front nine and making the turn in 2-over 37, the 54-year-old South African came home with two birdies and another bogey.
