Langer Wins 3M Championship


Bernhard Langer carded a 10-under 62 to overtake the leaders in the 3M Championship and claim his 15th victory on the Champions Tour. The $1.75 million, 54-hole event began Friday at TPC Twin Cities in Blaine, Minn.

The 54-year-old German, who earned $262,500, had five birdies on the front nine and five more on the back to reach 18-under 198, two shots ahead of 36-hole leader David Peoples and three in front of Kenny Perry (64) and Olin Browne (66).

Joel Edwards (67) finished in solo fifth at 201, while a stroke back was Jeff Sluman (65). Craig Stadler (66), Peter Senior (68) and Tom Kite shared seventh at 204.

Defending champion Jay Haas posted rounds of 71, 71 and 69 to end up T-39 at 211.

Hale Irwin had the shot of the day. With an 8-iron he sank his second shot from 171 yards on the par-4 ninth hole en route to a 7-under 65, two strokes less than his age. Irwin, a 45-time winner on the Champions Tour, also carded three bogeys and eight birdies, including six in a row on the 11th through 16th holes.

After opening with two straight 74s, Irwin ended up tied for 50th at 3-under 213. "It's a damn hard hole," said Irwin, the first-ever player to eagle the 456-yard ninth.
