Lingmerth Wins Maiden Title at Memorial

David Lingmerth parred the third sudden-death playoff hole to edge Justin Rose and win the Memorial Tournament. The $6.2 million PGA Tour event took place at Muirfield Village Golf Club in Dublin, Ohio.

The 34-year-old Rose began Sunday with a three-stroke edge over Lingmerth. But the 27-year-old from Sweden, who attended college at Arkansas, closed with a 3-under 69 to tie Rose, who shot even-par 72, and match the Englishman at 15-under 273 in regulation.

After both players twice made scrambling pars on the par-4 18th, the duo moved to the par-4 10th hole. Rose couldn't get up and down from the rough alongside the green, while Lingmerth two-putted for the winning par and his first-ever PGA Tour victory.

"I can't believe it right now, I'm so happy," an excited Lingmerth said during a brief greenside interview on TV.

The victory was worth $1.117 million and 500 FedEx Cup points along with a two-year exemption on the PGA Tour.

Jordan Spieth rose up the leaderboard thanks to a closing 7-under 65, giving the Texan a tie for third with Italy's Francesco Molinari (71) at 275.

One stroke further back were Australia's Marc Leishman (69), defending Memorial champion Hideki Matsuyama (71) and Jim Furyk (71).

Americans Tony Finau (67), Kevin Kisner (70) and Keegan Bradley (70) shared eighth at 277.

After recording his highest-ever round on the PGA Tour, a 13-over 85 on Saturday, Tiger Woods closed with a 74 to end up in last place at 14-over 302.

His longtime rival, Phil Mickelson, wasn't much better as the five-time major champion carded rounds of 78 and 75 over the weekend to end up at 5-over 293 and tied for 65th.
