Long-Time Tour Caddie Passes


Scott Steele, who worked for Larry Mize when he won the 1997 Masters and two other Tour players, has died. The 55-year-old suffered a heart attack October 14 in the parking lot at the Champions Tour's Great Hickory Classic in North Carolina, where he was working for Kirk Triplett.

Steele never recovered. He was placed in a medically-induced coma, but died Saturday after suffering another heart attack.

On Sunday, players, officials and caddies will wear black ribbons to honor Steele in the final round of the McGladrey Classic at Sea Island, Ga.

"It didn't matter if you were a major champion or a Monday qualifier, you always got his best game," said Triplett, who worked with Steele since 2010. "He may be gone but he will continue to be an inspiration to me and many others for a long time to come."

"He was one of those guys that nobody ever had a bad word about him," fellow caddie Mark Huber told GolfChannel.com. "Some caddies like to be in the show, but he just wanted to be a caddie."

Steele also part of his career looping for PGA Tour regular Tim Herron, helping lead Herron to victory in the 2006 Colonial invitational.
