McIlroy Nabs Hong Kong Open Title


Rory McIlroy carded a 5-under 65 Sunday to win the Hong Kong Open. The 72-hole event sanctioned by the European and Asian tours was played at Hong Kong Golf Club.

McIlroy, the reigning U.S. Open champion, capped off his Sunday charge by holing out from a greenside bunker on the final hole for his fifth birdie of the day that sealed a two-stroke victory over France's Gregory Havret, who also shot 65.

McIlory ended up at 12-under 268 and was very pleased afterward. "It is very special to win this. No matter how prestigious tournaments are, this is one of my favorites and I'm really happy to win it," he said.

"To be able to win a golf tournament when you are not at your best is something. Tiger Woods did this all the time. This is a great win, to come from behind and to be able to draw level and then close it out."

Peter Hanson (70) at 271, while tied for fourth at 272 were Richie Ramsay (66) and 2010 champion Ian Poulter (66).

Third-round leader Alvaro Quiros of Spain stumbled to a 3-over 73 on Sunday to fall into a tie for seventh at 273.

John Daly acquitted himself well this week. After opening with a 73, the two-time major winner carded rounds of 68, 67 and 69 to end up tied for 21st at 2-under 278.
