Medalist Matsubara Falls in U.S. Women's Amateur


After defeating the top qualifier in the U.S. Women's Amateur, Yumi Matsubara, 2 and 1, in the second round of match play Thursday morning, 17-year-old Lauren Diaz-Yi of Thousand Oaks, Calif., advanced to the quarterfinals by edging 20-year-old Kendall Prince of Lake Oswego, Ore., 4 and 3, in the afternoon.

Matsubara, a 14-year-old from Japan, became the No. 1 seed after she shot a 7-under 64 in the second round of stroke-play qualifying. Her score broke the previous low qualifying mark of 65 set by Rachel Rohanna in the opening round of the 2010 U.S. Women's Amateur at Charlotte (N.C.) Country Club.

On Friday, Diaz-Yi will face 40th seed Doris Chen of Chinese Taipei, who beat Kacie Komoto of Honolulu 4 and 3 and Erynne Lee of Silverdale, Wash., 2 and 1.

Also advancing to the quarterfinals is Yueer Cindy Feng of Orlando, who in the afternoon beat Casie Cathrea of Livermore, Calif., 1-up. Feng will face Annie Park, Levittown, N.Y., who in another 1-up match vanquished Kelly Shon of Port Washington, N.Y.

Katelyn Sepmoree of Tyler, Texas, got past Aurora Kan of Boothwyn, Pa., by a tight 1-up margin, and will go against Alison Lee of Valencia, Calif., who beat Alexandra Harkins, Crystal Lake, Ill., 3 and 2.

At the bottom end of the Round of 32 bracket, Australia's Su-Hyun Oh routed Cammie Gray, Northport, Ala., 5 and 4, and moved on to play Emma Talley of Princeton, Ky., who eked out a 2-up victory over Maria Fassi of Mexico.
