New Season Ending for the PGA Tour?


The PGA Tour is in early-stage discussions over changes to the protocol for its season-ending events. One consideration is for the players who don't qualify for the FedEx Cup playoffs to compete for their next-year cards in a series of tournaments also involving the top players on the Nationwide Tour.

PGA Tour spokesman Ty Votaw said Monday from Orlando that the policy board has given preliminary approval to the idea, although further discussions are planned.

Votaw also said the Tour has sent out letters to the players notifying them of the possible change.

He added that the Tour is evaluating whether to allow only Nationwide Tour players entry into its end-of-the-year Q-School. "There are still a number of steps," Votaw said.

The Tour has been contemplating how to bolster the Nationwide Tour, its "developmental league," and is seeking a new overall sponsor as Nationwide said it will not renew its contract at the end of the 2012 season.
