Perry Holds off Langer; Wins 3M Championship

Kenny Perry birdied the par-5 18th hole at TPC Twin Cities in Blaine, Minn., to edge Bernhard Langer and win the 3M Championship.

Perry closed with a 7-under 65 to finish 54 holes at 23-under 193, a mere stroke ahead of Langer. The 56-year-old Langer, a four-time winner this year who took the most recent Champions Tour event, the Senior Open Championship at Royal Porthcawl in Wales, fired a 9-under 63.

The German carded 10 birdies and a bogey Sunday; six of his birdies came on the back nine at a course that annually yields some of the lowest scores on the over-50 circuit.

Gene Sauers (65), Jeff Maggert (65) and Marco Dawson (67) shared third at 20-under 196, while Mike Goodes took solo sixth at 198 following a 64.

John Cook and Vijay Singh each carded 68s to tie for seventh at 16-under 200, while two strokes further down the leaderboard were Wes Short Jr. (62), Peter Senior (66), Paul Goydos (67), Steve Elkington (67), Hale Irwin (68) and Gary Hallberg (71).

Short's 10-birdie outing was the low round of the tournament.

Perry, who won $262,500, will now shift his focus on his home state of Kentucky. The 53-year-old from Elizabethtown will be teeing it up against the flat-bellies this week at the PGA Championship, which will be held at Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville.
