Perry & Maggert Share Top Spot in 3M Championship
Kenny Perry and Jeff Maggert will enter Sunday of the 3M Championship tied for the lead at 14-under par. But the two will have a bit of work to do before starting the final round as a heavy rainstorm came through TPC Twin Cities in Blaine, Minn., and postponed play.
Both Perry and Maggert must complete the par-5 18th hole before commencing their final rounds. At the time the players headed to the clubhouse, Perry was 7-under and Maggert was 6-under.
The horn blew at 4:14 p.m. CDT, with just two groups needing to complete the 18th hole.
One stroke behind are Gene Sauers and Gary Hallberg, who each carded 7-under 65s, while also at that number was 18-hole leader Marco Dawson, who was 4-under on his round before play was halted.
John Cook (63) and Bernhard Langer (4-under through 17) are at 12-under par, while another stroke back are Kirk Triplett (66), Doug Garwood (67) and Vijay Singh (3-under through 17).
Cook was pleased with his outing. "A lot of good, quality shots," said the nine-time Champions Tour winner, who couldn't play for 10 weeks earlier this year because of a fractured rib. "I haven't played many good rounds of golf this year, missed a lot of time. My buffer zone of being rusty is over. I need to be playing a lot better and this is a good start."
Langer is coming off his fourth victory - and second major - of the year in last week's Senior Open Championship.
Sharing 11th at 10-under 134 in the 54-hole, $1.75 million event are David Frost (65), Scott Dunlap (65), Hale Irwin (66), Jeff Sluman (67) and Mike Goodes (68).
Irwin's 66 is three strokes below his age; the Colorado native turned 69 in June.
"At 69, if I can go out and shoot 69 or better I'm going to feel good about it," said Irwin, the all-time winner on the Champions Tour with 45 titles. "I think it's a long-shot to say I'm going to win something. But stranger things have happened. I'm in good position here if I can just hold it together."
Because of the threat of more storms Sunday, the final-round tee times were moved up.
