Perry Sets Pace in AT&T Championship


Kenny Perry got off to a good start in the $1.9 million AT&T Championship. The 54-hole Champions Tour event began Friday at the Canyons Course at TPC San Antonio in Texas. turn in 4-under

Perry, the points' leader in the season-long Charles Schwab Cup, fired a 7-under 65 for a one-stroke lead over Tom Pernice Jr. Perry carded five birdies and a bogey on the front nine to make the turn in 4-under 32, then tacked on three more birdies coming home.

Perry, a two-time winner this year - both coming in majors at the Senior Players Championship and U.S. Senior Open, came into San Antonio with a 494-point lead in the Charles Schwab Cup over Bernhard Langer.

Langer carded a 67 and shares third with Anders Forsbrand, while three behind Perry are Bob Tway, Russ Cochran and Colin Montgomerie.

Defending champion David Frost got off to a rocky start with a 77, while 2011 AT&T winner Fred Couples - who didn't play last year because of a bad back - opened with a 75.
