Perry Wins Third Title of the Year


Kenny Perry birdied the first sudden-death playoff hole to beat Bernhard Langer and win the $1.9 million AT&T Championship. The 54-hole Champions Tour event took place on the Canyons Course at TPC San Antonio in Texas.

Perry and Langer entered the final round tied for the lead at 8-under 136 with Mike Goodes, Colin Montgomerie and Anders Forsbrand.

On Sunday, Perry and Langer posted a 67. Perry carded six birdies and a bogey - all in the first 12 holes before finishing with pars for his 5-under score. His last par came on the par-4 18th when he sank a 20-foot putt.

After three birdies and a bogey on the front nine, Langer added three more birdies on the home half to tie Perry in regulation at 13-under 203.

On the first playoff hole, Perry sank an 8-foot birdie putt to edge Langer for this third title of the year. The Kentuckian's two previous victories both came in majors - the Senior Players Championship and U.S. Senior Open.

His latest win, worth $285,000, allowed Perry to extend his lead in the Charles Schwab Cup over Langer from 494 to 612 points.

Next week will be the season-ending Schwab Cup Championship at TPC Harding Park in San Francisco. Only the top 30 players on the tour's money list qualify for the finale, but Perry and Langer are the only two with a chance to win the $1 million annuity for the overall points' title.

Fred Funk closed with a 67 to tie for third at 205 with Kirk Triplett (68) and Montgomerie (69). Another two strokes back were John Riegger (67), Russ Cochran (69) and Forsbrand (71).

Defending champion David Frost wasn't able to overcome his opening 77, shooting 69 and 66 over the weekend to end up tied for 22nd at 212. Goodes closed with a 75 to finish T18 at 211.
