Plans Moving Ahead on Second Course at Cabot Links

Routing plans by the design firm of Coore and Crenshaw are continuing on a companion course for Cabot Links, the remote links-style layout that opened earlier this year on Cape Breton, the northern island in the Canadian province of Nova Scotia.

The original course was designed by Canadian architect Rod Whitman, who apprenticed under Pete Dye, and it occupies a reclaimed mining area bordering the Gulf of St. Lawrence. The par-70, 6,803-yard layout features a unique 37-33 configuration of its two nines; there's only one par-3 on the 3,822-yard front side but four on the 2,981-yard inward half.

The second 18 - to be called Cabot Cliffs - is situated a mile north of Cabot Links on headlands above the water. The plans there also include a hotel; the projected date of Cabot Cliffs' opening is mid-2014.

The two principals in the Cabot Links development are Ben Cowan-Dewar and Mike Keiser, the developer of Bandon Dunes along the Pacific Ocean. Once the second course opens, the two are hoping to turn Cabot Links and Cabot Cliffs into a North American East Coast version of the popular southwest Oregon golf destination.
