Ramsay Takes European Masters


Scotland's Richie Ramsay closed with a 5-under 66 to win the European Masters by four strokes. The victory by the 2006 U.S. Amateur champion from Aberdeen was his second on the European Tour and first since the 2009 South African Open.

Ramsay, who began the final round a shot ahead of England's Danny Willett and fellow Scot Paul Lawrie, ended up at 16-under 267 at Crans-sur-Sierre Golf Club in France. The win was worth $440,000.

"It's just incredible, the whole day went to plan," said Ramsay. He added that the title would move his career "up a notch. It definitely pushes me to another level."

The 29-year-old added, "It's a bigger win than the U.S. Amateur. If you look at the field and the place and the way that I did it."

Sharing second at 271 were Willett (69), Sweden's Fredrik Andersson Hed (66), Aussie Marcus Fraser (66) and France's Romain Wattel (66).

Lawrie, the winner in last week's Johnnie Walker Championship, posted a 70 to end up in sixth at 272 with Felipe Aguilar (67) of Chile and Bernd Wiesberger (66) of Austria.

The shot of the day came from Sweden's Mathias Gronberg, who aced the 191-yard third hole with a 7-iron. He shot a 71 to finish at 8-under 275.
