Scott Rallies to Win The Barclays


Adam Scott waited around as all the leaders missed opportunities to win The Barclays. And when the dust settled, the 33-year-old Aussie grabbed his second victory of the year at Liberty National Golf Club in New Jersey.

Scott, who won his first major title at the Masters in April, closed with a 5-under 66 to finish at 11-under 273, one stroke ahead of Canada's Graham DeLaet, who shot Sunday's low round, a 65, 2013 U.S. Open champion Justin Rose (68), Tiger Woods (69) and Gary Woodland (73).

Scott finished 45 minutes ahead of the final group. "I can't believe it, I didn't think I could do it," Scott told a TV reporter on the practice range in case of a playoff and after learning victory was his. "I just tried to play a good round."

The win, worth $1.44 million and 2,500 FedEx Cup points, was the 10th of Scott's career.

Woodland, who entered the final round sharing the lead with Matt Kuchar, had a birdie chance on the par-4 closing hole but his 10-footer missed wide left. Moments earlier, Rose three-putted for bogey on the 18th and also lost a chance to tie Scott.

Woods also had his chances despite dealing with back spasms that flared up on the back nine and brought him to his knees after pulling his 5-wood second shot on the par-5 13th hole into a water hazard. But after a bogey there, followed by a par and another bogey, the top-ranked player in golf birdied the 16th and 17th.

He also could have joined Scott at 11-under, but his birdie putt from the back fringe on the 18th green pulled up inches short. "I had a chance," Woods told a TV reporter. "I hit a good putt. I thought I made it. It was a little double-breaker and I thought I had it."

Finishing two strokes behind Scott were Phil Mickelson, who matched DeLaet for Sunday's low round, D.A. Points (67) and Jim Furyk (67). Sharing ninth at 276 were Jason Kokrak (67), Matt Every (68), defending Barclays champion Nick Watney (69) and Rickie Fowler (70).

Rory Sabbatini (68) and Bubba Watson (71) shared 13th at 277, while another stroke back were John Huh (70), Daniel Summerhays (70), Webb Simspon (71) and Kevin Chappell.

Chappell was only a shot behind the co-leaders entering Sunday but the 27-year-old Californian closed with a 76 to drop into a tie for 15th at 278.

Kuchar had a rugged day. Entering Sunday tied with Woodland at 12-under 201, the 2010 Barclays winner posted a 7-over 78 that included five bogeys, a devastating triple-bogey on the par-4 ninth, and a birdie on the last to fall into a tie for 19th at 4-under 279.

Jonas Blixt also ballooned in the final round. Starting only five back of the 54-hole co-leaders, the Swede carded a 10-over 81 and ended up T-58 at 3-over 287.

The top-100 players in the FedEx Cup points' standings now move on to next week's Deutsche Bank Championship. The second leg of the four-event Playoffs starts Friday - with a Labor Day finish on Monday - at TPC Boston.
