Scott & Tringale Rise to Top of The Barclays


Adam Scott fired a 6-under 65 to take a share of the 36-hole lead with Cameron Tringale in The Barclays. The $8 million tournament - the first in the PGA Tour's season-ending, four-event FedEx Cup Playoffs - is being held at the A.W. Tillinghast-designed Ridgewood Country Club in Paramus, N.J.

Through four holes, Scott had a bogey and a birdie. But on Nos. 5-8 he reeled off four straight birdies to make the turn in 4-under 31. On the home half the 34-year-old Aussie tacked on two more birdies to get to 8-under 134, the same number as Tringale, who's posted rounds of 66 and 68.

Sharing third at 7-under are Brendon Todd (69), Jim Furyk (69), Ernie Els (68), Russell Knox (69), Jason Day (64) and Kevin Na. Also at 136 are first-round leader Bo Van Pelt, who followed up his opening 65 with a 71, and defending FedEx Cup champion, Henrik Stenson, who carded a 64 Friday.

Scott, who won The Barclays - his most recent triumph - last year when it was held at Liberty National in New Jersey, says he's motivated this year in the Cup. "There's so much to play for, and for me to be satisfied with the year, I need four really great weeks," the Adelaide native said.

No. 1-ranked Rory McIlroy, who entered the tournament off three straight victories in the Open Championship, WGC-Bridgestone Invitational and PGA Championship, rebounded from an opening 74 with a 66 to get to 3-under 139. The 25-year-old Northern Irishman says there's plenty of golf left to go over the weekend.

"It's a very bunched leaderboard," he said. "I'm still five shots behind, but there's a lot of players between me and the leaders - obviously, a few quality guys at the top, Adam being one of them. So I'm going to have to shoot a couple of rounds similar to today to maybe win this thing."

The 36-hole cut was set at 1-over 143. Making it to the weekend right on the number was Phil Mickelson, who's carded rounds of 71 and 72. Not so fortunate were major winners Justin Leonard, Louis Oosthuizen, Webb Simpson, Martin Kaymer and Geoff Ogilvy.

Also missing out on the last two rounds is Camilo Villegas, who qualified for the event after winning the final tournament before the Playoffs, last week's Wyndham Championship. The Colombian shot rounds of 72 and 76.
