Sorenstam Expecting Second Child


Annika Sorenstam is expecting. The 40-year-old LPGA Hall of Famer announced on her website and via Twitter that she is pregnant with her second child.

She and her husband Mike McGee expect the birth next summer. The new baby will join daughter Ava, who was born September 1, 2009. "Mike and I are happy to share that our family will be a foursome by early summer," Sorenstam wrote. "Ava is ready to be a big sister."

The timing of Sorenstam's second child will be interesting since Sorenstam is honorary chair of the U.S. Women's Open at The Broadmoor in Colorado Springs, Colo., in early July. It was at that venue in 1995 where Sorenstam won the Open for her first LPGA victory.

Sorenstam retired from competition after the 2008 season. Prior to then, the Swede notched 73 LPGA Tour titles, including 10 major championships.

After leaving the Tour she's been tending to family concerns as well as pursuing various business interests, including golf course design, a perfume, financial group, charitable foundation and golf-training academy near her home in Orlando.

In addition to being the first woman in 58 years to compete in a PGA Tour event - at the Colonial in 2003, Sorenstam is the only woman to shoot 59 in competition and one of only six to complete a career Grand Slam.
