Sorenstam to Design Course in Turkey

Annika Sorenstam has signed an agreement to design an 18-hole golf course for the new Olivion Golf Resort development in Belek, Turkey. Olivion will be Sorenstam first course-design project in Europe and ninth worldwide. The project is currently in its early stages.

The Olivion Golf Resort is near Belek, and 45 minutes from Antalya. Turkey is becoming a popular destination as the golf courses and beaches are attracting people from all over the world, and Belek has become one of the centers of Turkey's tourism industry.

"Venturing into Europe to design a new course is especially exciting," said Sorenstam. "I've had the opportunity to play some of the best courses in the world and I enjoy that I can share my passion for the game by designing courses that all ages and skill levels can enjoy."

The Golf Hall of Fame member is visiting the site this week to walk the course and work with developers to review the project. Sorenstam and Stan Eby of European Golf Design have routed the course and firmed up other elements, including positioning the greens and bunkers. Construction is due to start in spring 2011, with the course ready for players in 2012.

While making the site visit Sorenstam will be awarded the Golf Entrepreneur of the Year Award at the KPMG Golf Business Forum in Belek on Thursday, May 13. She is being recognized for her commitment to the game of golf, combined with her diverse entrepreneurial spirit. Sorenstam will accept the first-ever KPMG Golf Entrepreneur of the Year award before an expected audience of more than 300 international industry professionals.
