Stadler Hangs on to Win at Scottsdale

Kevin Stadler nailed down his first PGA Tour win, closing with a 3-under 68 to win the Waste Management Phoenix Open at TPC Scottsdale in Arizona.

The 33-year-old son of Craig Stadler carded five birdies and a double-bogey Sunday to finish at 16-under 268, one stroke ahead of Canada's Graham DeLaet, who carded a 65, and third-round leader Bubba Watson, who shot even-par 71.

On the par-4 18th hole, Stadler hit a great approach but missed his 10-foot birdie try to win the tournament outright. Playing alongside Stadler in the final group was Watson, who over-hit the green but chipped up to four feet. The 2012 Masters champion could have made par and forced extra holes with his short putt, but he missed, giving the title to Stadler.

"It wasn't pretty," Stadler said to a TV reporter at greenside. "Hit a lot of ugly shots but it all worked out . . . Feels fantastic," he added about finally getting his first victory. "It's been a long time coming. I'll take it any way I can get it."

The win was worth $1.116 million and 500 FedEx Cup points.

Finishing tied for fourth at 270 were Hunter Mahan (68) and Japan's Hideki Matsuyama (69), while another stroke back were Charles Howell III (65), Brendon Steele (69) and Ryan Moore (70).

Harris English shot a 71 to take solo ninth at 12-under, and another stroke back was Webb Simpson (66).
