Stadler & Karlsson Ahead in Weather-Delayed OHL Classic at Mayakoba


The field tried but ultimately wasn't successful in their efforts to play catch-up in the OHL Classic at Mayakoba. For the second day in a row, the $6 million PGA Tour event at El Camaleon Golf Club in Playa del Carmen, Mexico, was interrupted by bad weather and finally halted by darkness.

After two suspensions Thursday threw a wrench into the schedule, rain and lightning came through the area at 4:00 p.m. Friday to force the players off the course and into the clubhouse. They returned soon, but not quickly enough to allow all players to complete their second rounds.

Play was eventually halted and will resume at 7:45 a.m. Saturday morning before the start of the third round, with the 36-hole cut taking place before that happens.

When the dust settled, Kevin Stadler and Robert Karlsson were the clubhouse leaders at 12-under 130. Stadler duplicated the Swede's opening effort of 8-under 63, while Karlsson followed up his first round with a 67.

Stadler had a stellar day. The 33-year-old son of Craig Stadler posted three birdies on the front nine and five more on the back for a flawless round. After his nine-birdie, one-bogey first round, Karlsson carded six birdies - including four in a row on Nos. 5-8, followed by two birdies and a pair of bogeys on the home half for a 67.

After finishing up his first round and before teeing off in the second, Karlsson told PGATour.com he was pleased with the state of his game. "I feel pretty happy the way I'm going," the tall Swede said. "I didn't score very well in the Web.com playoffs, but I had the feeling the game was coming back."

Stadler had the shot of the day on the 153-yard, par-3 15th when his tee ball almost rolled into the hole for an ace. His ball went just past the cup, spun back and just missed, setting up an easy tap-in birdie. Stadler is in good position, however, for his first PGA Tour victory heading into the weekend.

Karlsson and Stadler were among the lucky few who finished their second rounds; only 26 players in the 132-man field were able to do so.

Sitting three shots back are Rory Sabbatini (6-under in the second round through 17 holes) and Chris Stroud (-4 through 15).

Ryan Moore carded his second straight 67 and is at 8-under 134 along with Venezuela's Jhonattan Vegas (68). Also at 8-under is Pat Perez (-3 through 14) and Jay McLuen (-4 through 14). Jason Bohn (68) is in at 7-under 135 as is fellow American Scott Brown, who's minus-5 on his second round through 17 holes.

Defending champion and 2013 Rookie of the Year John Huh followed up his opening 70 with a 68 to reach 4-under 138.

Four players - Jim Herman, Fred Funk, George McNeill and Scott Piercy withdrew before the start of the second round. Argentina's Andres Romero pulled out after completing only two holes of the first round.

The 36-hole cut was set overnight at 1-under 141, but so many players have yet to finish their second rounds that the line is likely to change.
