Summerhays Fires 62 at John Deere Classic
Daniel Summerhays burst out of the pack after carding the low third-round score - a 9-under 62 - in the John Deere Classic. The $4.6 million PGA Tour event is taking place at TPC Deere Run in Silvis, Ill.
Summerhays, a 29-year-old from Utah in search of his first Tour victory, carded 10 birdies Saturday. His only dropped shot came on the par-3 third hole. He stands at 19-under 194, two shots ahead of Canada's David Hearn, who had a 64, and three in front of defending champion Zach Johnson (67).
Four back are J.J. Henry (65) and Jerry Kelly (66), while five behind heading into Sunday's final round are Americans Nicholas Thompson (64) and Chris Kirk (66) and Australia's Matt Jones (68).
Patrick Reed, Lucas Glover and Johnson began Saturday tied for the lead. Reed posted a 70 and dropped into a tie for ninth at 200 with Jordan Spieth and Kevin Sutherland, who both had 65s.
Glover had a 71 and is tied for 12th at 201 with Morgan Hoffman (63), amateur Patrick Rodgers (65), Jim Herman (67) and Troy Matteson (69). Three-time Deere champion Steve Stricker posted a 69 and is tied for 17th at 202 with six other players.
Rodgers, a junior at Stanford, put on an impressive display, posting seven birdies and a lone bogey. The native of Avon, Ind., was actually atop the leaderboard Saturday - for 15 minutes. Seeing his name up there was a thrill for the collegiate All-American. "It's cool to be on top of the board, but I'd rather be on top of the board at the end of the week," Rodgers told PGATour.com.
Rodgers added that his experience this week at the Deere will only help him in the future. "There's a lot of guys who have come out here and had success. It gives me confidence to come out here and play well," he said. "I'm my own person and I make my own decisions. But it's definitely nice to come out here and gain some experience and see other guys who have played well as well."
