Tiger's Agent Arrested on DWI


Tiger Woods displayed a considerable amount of concentration Sunday in winning the Memorial Tournament. Before the start of the final round at Muirfield Village Golf Club in Ohio, Woods was informed by his longtime agent Mark Steinberg that Steinberg had been arrested late Saturday in Ardsley, N.Y., on suspicion of driving while intoxicated.

Steinberg was one of 11 suspects arrested at a sobriety checkpoint off the New York State Thruway in Westchester County. Sgt. Dave Fisher of the Ardsley Police Department told Bloomberg News Service in a telephone interview that Steinberg "did inform us who he was . . . It is what it is. He was intoxicated."

Steinberg, 44, was charged with DWI and aggravated DWI, according to Bloomberg, because his Breathalyzer result was over .18, more than twice New York's legal limit of .08. He was released without bail, according to the report.

In response to a Bloomberg inquiry about the incident, Steinberg said via email that "it's a medical issue that I was dealing with. It's not what you think."

Sgt. Fisher countered that claim, saying, "It was alcohol-related. He submitted to a chemical test to determine alcohol-blood content and he failed that test."

Woods told The Associated Press that he had spoken to Steinberg before the Memorial's final round. When asked about knowing of the arrest before starting play, Woods told the Golf Channel, "Yes, I did. And no comment."

Steinberg has represented Woods since 1999. He left IMG last year to join New York-based Excel Sports Management and later lured Woods to Excel.
