Tough Sledding in Tucson

Snow flurries halted play in the opening round of the WGC-Accenture Match Play Championship near Tucson, Ariz. The 64 players were shuttled off the Dove Mountain course at 1:07 p.m. ET as snow and ice made the greens unplayable.

In addition to frigid temperatures and snow, winds between 20-30 mph, with gusts up to 35, also made for some tough playing conditions. Officials later canceled the first round at 3:05 p.m., with play to resume at 10:30 a.m. Thursday. Another one to two inches of snow are forecast for Wednesday night.

A similar snow situation arose in 2011 during the 36-hole championship match between eventual winner Luke Donald and Martin Kaymer. But that year the snow was relatively light.

None of the matches were completed before play was canceled, and the top seeds - Rory McIlroy, Tiger Woods, Louis Oosthuizen and Donald - had yet to tee off.
