Van Pelt & Garrigus Tied for Lead in CIMB Classic


Bo Van Pelt fired a 9-under 62 to take a share of the top spot in the $6.1 million CIMB Classic with 36-hole leader Robert Garrigus, who shot a 69 at the Mines Resort & Golf Club in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The two head into Sunday's final round at 16-under 197.

Van Pelt, the defending champion in the tournament, had a weird round. The Indiana native carded six birdies on the front nine to make the turn in 6-under 29, the reeled off five more birdies and would have shot a magical 59 with a birdie on the par-4 18th.

But instead of becoming the sixth player in history to shoot that number, he double-bogeyed the closing hole. "Obviously disappointed to finish with a double-bogey," he said, "but I'm really proud of the 17-and-a-half holes I played and hopefully that'll carry over into tomorrow, and not the last half."

Van Pelt rallied from a seven-stroke deficit to catch Garrigus, who carded six birdies and four bogeys. "I don't think I missed a fairway on the front nine," Van Pelt said. "My irons were pretty sharp, and the putter, I had been close all week, and today they were going in. They weren't burning the edge."

Chris Kirk carded a 63 to reach 198, while another stroke back are Brendon de Jonge (66) and Jbe' Kruger (69). Brian Harman had a 66 to get to 200, while at 201 are Tom Gillis (66), Nick Watney (65) and Greg Chalmers (69).

After opening with a 66 and 67, Tiger Woods shot a 69 Saturday. He knows what he's facing on Sunday. "I'm going to have to shoot a low one tomorrow, something similar to what Bo did today," he said. "The problem with being this far back is I'm going to need help. A great round tomorrow might not win it, that's the only problem, but I'm going to put up a great round anyways."
