Wilson Gets Third Victory in a Year

Mark Wilson sank a clutch birdie putt on the 72nd hole to sew up the $5.6 million Humana Challenge.

The 72-hole PGA Tour event finished in the gloaming at the Palmer Course in La Quinta, Calif., as the third round had to be completed Sunday morning due to high winds that canceled play Saturday.

But the long day didn't faze Wilson, who notched his third win in the past 12 months and the fifth of his career.

The 37-year-old posted a 5-under 67 in the third round and a 3-under 69 in the fourth to finish at 24-under 264, two shots ahead of last week's winner Johnson Wagner (65), John Mallinger (66) and Robert Garrigus (68).

"I just hung in there," Wilson said during a greenside interview, adding that birdies on two of his last three holes were keys. "The birdie on 16 was big, and the one here (on 18) was the capper."

Jeff Maggert had a 64 Sunday to end up in fifth at 267, while another shot back were David Toms (68) and John Senden (67).

In his season debut Phil Mickelson made the 54-hole cut after completing a 66 in the morning. "Lefty" closed with a 69 to end up sharing 49th at 10-under 278.

Defending champion Jhonattan Vegas wasn't around for the last round. The 27-year-old Venezuelan was forced to sit out after shooting 70, 72 and 70.
