Wu Wins Volvo China Open

Ashun Wu closed with a 1-under 71 to win the Volvo China Open. The European Tour event was held at Tomson Shanghai Pudong Golf Club in Shanghai.

On Sunday, the 29-year-old Wu posted two birdies and a bogey to finish at 9-under 279, a stroke ahead of England's David Howell, who carded a 72.

With his victory, worth $543,000, Wu became the first Chinese player to win on his native soil.

Wu began the final round tied for the 54-hole lead with Howell, defending champion Alexander Levy from France and countryman Li Hao-tong, an up-and-coming 19-year-old. But Wu played the steadiest down the stretch - with qcbirdie and eight pars on the back nine - to pull off the big win.

"I tried my best to play every shot well," he said. "I played very good today - not down, not up. Just simple golf today."

Wu is the third Chinese player to win on the tour and the first since Liang Wen -Chong won the Singapore Masters in 2007.

Argentina's Emiliano Grillo shot a 69 to move into third place at 281 with Thailand's Prom Meesawat (71) and Levy (73). Li had a 74 and was another stroke back.
